Marcia M. Smolcha became interested in primitive early American painting and studied the character and naïveté of this multifaceted American art with the intent to learn to create similar stylized watercolor paintings of her own. After years perfecting her craft, she was able to paint fine reproductions and original paintings. Her work is now shown in antique and period-style frames under her exhibition business trade name, American Folk. She also makes her own hand-painted and grained frames in the style of the early 1800s.
In addition to appearing in the Directory of Traditional American Crafts several times, Smolcha has exhibited collections of her work annually since 2003. Major art shows include the Early American Artisans Show, the Wilton Historical Society American Artisans Show, the Designer Craftsmen Show, and the Fine Americana Artisans Craftmanship Show. As a compliment to her career as an artist, she has been a freelance interior design consultant for over twenty years.
Smolcha is originally from central Pennsylvania where her Pennsylvania Dutch ancestors have lived since the mid-1700s. She graduated from Penn State with a degree in art education and relocated with her husband, Rowan, first to Pennsylvania's Lehigh Valley, then to Pittsford, New York.
