Annie Hayes bases her hooked rug designs on playfulness and unpredictable color. She enjoys the inventiveness and abandoned character of handmade, primitive rugs.
Hayes hand-dyes her wool, which she purchases or recycles from old jackets and skirts from a friend’s antique clothing store. She uses only garments that are no longer wearable.
Her surroundings infuse her work. In her rugs, she includes everything from the rabbit in the yard on her Cape Cod vacation to her daughter’s exuberant drawings.
