Kathie Ratcliffe lives in Waterford, Virginia, a National Historic Landmark village. She began quilting and collecting antique quilts thirty-five years ago. Combining her talents in needlework with her passion for 19th-Century pieced quilts, she taught herself to make quilts of many sizes, all with a 19th-Century palette and design. As her collection grew and her house did not, she began to downsize her quilting. Using her growing knowledge of antique quilts and textiles, she began piecing quilts at miniature scale. This new direction gave her the opportunity to make quilts in many regional genres and to document 19th-Century trends in fabrics and design styles, particularly using the same vibrant colors and patterns that made the originals so exceptional. In so doing, she preserves the finest of traditional quilt art as small treasures. Ratcliffe’s continuing challenge and joy is to use the inspiration of a fine antique quilt and capture its essence in very small pieces.
