Portrait of Robert G. Stevenson Jr.

Robert G. Stevenson crafts furniture of all sorts—custom, one of a kind, reproductions of period masterpieces. He was trained on the job with an English Master and holds a formal degree in furniture making. All pieces he offers are “bench Made” using family tools passed down several generations—18th and 19th Century tools that leave the same markings as are found on the orignal masterpieces.

Stevenson uses classic joinery in fashion his period reproductions—mortise-and-tenon and dovetails—using only the best available native and appropriate tropical hardwoods. He has a limited amount of Santo Domingo Mahogany in stock (veneer and boards). For glue joints he uses the purest of animal hide glues, one of the strongest available.

In addtion to formal furniture, Stevenson makes Windsor chairs using logs personally harvested in New Hampshire and hand riven, shaped and turned. All chairs are hand shaped, hand assembled and finished with milk paints in traditional hues—Windsor green, Federal red or Victorian black.
