James King, a craftsman and joiner, has been building furniture and musical instruments since his college days in the 1970s. He makes furniture in the early American style using techniques and tools like those of 250 years ago because of his passions for history and woodworking.
Part of the reason King loves historic American things is hereditary—his family traces its beginnings in America to southern Connecticut in the 17th century. Several of King's ancestors fought as Patriots during the American Revolution.
King considers what he does to be something larger than just woodworking. He noted, "It’s helping to keep a thread of our national heritage alive."
The entry deadline for the 2023 Directory of
Traditional American Crafts has passed. We are now processing entries and submitting
them to our jurors. We will contract entrants after the jurors have made ther decisions.
