Textiles and needlework combine multiple arts, including those that produce cloth and those that decorate it. Weavers create patterns as they loom threads together, and they may emulate any of a variety of period techniques. Stitchers use period needlework to put patterns on (and in) existing cloth. Either can produce artworks indistinguishable from period originals (save, perhaps, by carbon dating), so we require products to be properly identified. Alas, that means 21st Century dates on samplers emulating the 19th Century, but the work involved in making a modern sampler means its value will likely climb, too.
